FEATURED PROJECT: RAMA 9 RESTAURANT.
Housed in the basement of a Georgian tenement in St. Andrews, the project involved converting the low-ceiling space into a Thai eatery.
The client requested that the interior should reflect the rich colours and vibrancy of the street food inspired dishes. They also wanted to create an interior which captured the essence of the welcoming Thai culture, where everything is based on sharing food. This meant that the interior could not be “too stripped back” or “too architectural”.
‘Rama 9’ the former much beloved king of Thailand was chosen by our clients as the name and tribute for their new restaurant venture. We were advised by the client that “If you use an image of the king, it should be a photograph that is loved”.
The finished interior was a harmonious fusion of deep purple hues, twinkling gold leafed carvings and industrial bare Edison bulbed lighting. Reclaimed wooden floorboards were used as panelling for much of the wall area and (with our client’s approval) several of the dining areas were defined by floor to ceiling images of Rama 9 in various stages of his life.
"Mike has designed several succesfull restaurants for me, he's become a good friend. we even travelled to my home town of ipoh in malaysia together to source the most authentic furniture for my restaurant."
