FEATURED PROJECT: MEWS CONVERSION.
This project involved the conversion of a former mews building into a residential property, in the conservation area in the West end of Dundee. Previously used as a garage then lain empty for years, the building had fallen into a bad state of disrepair. Substantial works were required including the full strip of the building down to its 4 stone walls, before underpinning and then rebuilding from the walls up.
The small square footprint of the building of just 7.2m x 7.2m meant that an upper level was essential to provide an additional 19 sq. metres of living space for the property. By ‘floating’ the upper level on steel beams away from the perimeter of the ground floor meant that the lower level benefited from double height space and the borrowed light from the Velux windows and rooflights.
Structural elements such as the steel I-beams were left exposed with steel forming a key material in the buildings’ palate. Unlike other properties of this size high end finishes such as oak and toughened glass complement the use of steel, whilst also retaining a sense of the building’s previous history.
