BDES(hons) Interior and Environmental Design
“I set up DD Editions in 2019; it was an obvious extension to my Dundee based interior design studio DIX Design. I’ve often sourced and supplied furniture and art to clients as part of my interior design service, but thanks to my new premises I now have a space to collect, rework and make a beautiful selection of pieces.
I’ve always had a passion for sourcing rare and unique items, and I’m really excited to now be able to offer this collection alongside my design services. Pieces often start their life as one thing when they arrive at my studio (such as the ‘Sugi-Ban Whisky Cabinet). They are then reworked and restored to emerge as beautiful, bespoke and inheritable creations, fit for your individual interior.
I’ve never been satisfied with the constraints of one creative outlet; the best ideas and inspiration come when you least expect it! I might be in the middle of a large interior design project when the concept for a painting or a unique piece of furniture pops into my head. Of course, my client’s and their programmed projects are always top priority, but if an idea is right, I will make it a reality!
As a ‘curator’ or ‘collector’, I always look for interesting art and design that retains the memories of its maker’s and user’s lives. I am always mindful of the historic value of any piece and believe that any reworking should celebrate the beauty held within.”
what is dd editions ?
Our story
DD Editions is an evolution of our interior design studio DIX Design founded by artist and interior designer Michael Dix in 2009. The studio has a diverse and inventive portfolio of work; everything from staircases made wholly from glass, to artist work-spaces containing furniture made from reclaimed packaging materials.
We are asked so often to source and supply furniture for our interiors that we felt it was a natural progression to create DD Editions. Once we started supplying our existing clients we knew we had to push the envelope a bit further.
There’s a sense of weariness of shopping at supersize out of town furniture stores, lacking any sense of responsibility or sustainability. We love helping people create a sense of place using our carefully curated and sourced pieces. Our mission is to promote an appreciation of texture, form, detail and history through our art, design and furniture.
DD Editions alongside our interior design studio DIX Design can offer you everything you will need to create the space you deserve to have!
practicalities and premises
We soon realised that it was one thing to source a piece of furniture or art for a client, but storing and developing each piece was another. Logistically keeping pieces in the office or spreading out wherever we could find space was impractical. As a general rule a great piece isn’t found when it’s convenient! You have to seize opportunities when they present themselves; sometimes that means you don’t know when or where the new piece will go, but this leads to an amazing collection of items. The new workshop/ studio space has allowed this to happen.
The new premises are an exciting work in progress, and secondary to the pieces that they house inside. We welcome potential clients and customers to visit us at either the office or workshop. A workshop visit allows our clients to see what we see, with work in progress on various items always underway.
