As much art as design, the origins of the ‘Degenerate’ table lamps lie with hundreds of photos of broken street furniture, graffiti tags, rust, potholes and all the imperfections of the streetscape. Cast in-situ concrete ‘Brutalist’ architecture and sculpture are also strong influences on these works. Concrete is the best and worst of materials and these lamps individually demonstrate both. Each work has been cast from a single silicon mould; created from a single hand turned base by the artist.
Early cast lamps are the most perfect (or least imperfect) whilst, the later works are gnarled and rusty, caused by the degeneration of the mould. Old concrete can become beautifully polished from use and some of the latter lamps are as much polished as they are beautifully distorted.
Stainless steel mesh is used to create the shades, hand crafted by the finest shade-maker in Scotland.
