Charlotte Perriand: The Force Behind Le Corbusier's Chaise Longue

In the world of iconic furniture design, we often think of renowned architects and designers like Le Corbusier. Yet, it's essential to acknowledge the vital role played by talented collaborators. Charlotte Perriand, a French architect and designer, was one such figure who left an indelible mark on Le Corbusier's most celebrated creations, including the famous Chaise Longue.

Designed in 1928, the Chaise Longue showcases Perriand's innovation and design sensibilities. Its sleek, ergonomic design with a tubular steel frame and cowhide upholstery, coupled with its adaptability to allow sitters to recline, sit up, or lie flat, is a testament to her influence. Charlotte Perriand’s designs are still in production to this day via the Italian furniture brand ‘Cassina’ but her original pieces are highly prized by collectors. Demand for her work continues to grow, a world record for her work was set in 2017 when a ‘free-form’ desk sold for £600000.

More affordable examples of Perriand’s work can occasionally still be found, a couple of years ago I found a pair of ‘Jumo’ lamps at auction. They required re-wiring and were missing a few parts. Thankfully they were in original condition with the original (albeit pitted) paint work. Since acquiring them I have had them lightly cleaned and re-wired with new switches. All works to the lamps have been done in a way that is ‘non invasive’ i.e no holes drilled or alterations to the structure of the pieces. Concealed wooden bases have been attached (via Velcro) for safety reasons.

The ‘Jumo’ lamps (part of Perriand’s GS range) are great investment pieces by one of the twentieth centuries most iconic and sought after designers. The robust construction of the lamps make them attractive to both industrial and mid century design collectors alike.
